Why Choose Zero Waste Shopping?
The average household discards kilograms of plastic every month, much of which pollutes landfills, soil, and waterways. Zero waste shopping breaks this cycle by choosing reusable over disposable, and quality over quantity.
Every small shift counts. By shopping this way, you support local growers and makers, reduce packaging waste, and reconnect with the simple act of buying only what you truly need.
Most store-bought goods come wrapped in plastic that’s used once but lingers for lifetimes. By shopping mindfully, you reduce waste, support local suppliers, and live more lightly on the land.
This is shopping that nourishes both you and the planet.
🌿 Shop less, choose well, waste nothing.

!! ECOBRICKS !!
We turn our waste into something useful.
As part of our commitment to living lightly, we make and use ecobricks — plastic bottles packed tightly with clean, non-recyclable plastic waste. These become sturdy, long-lasting building blocks that we incorporate into natural building projects, such as garden benches, outdoor structures, and our cobb firebath.
By choosing to build with ecobricks, we're not just reducing our footprint — we're helping close the loop and reimagine what “waste” can be.
Why do we do it? Because the problem is real:
Globally, over 2 billion tonnes of waste are generated each year — and in South Africa alone, less than 10% of plastic is recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, waterways, or being burnt — polluting the soil, the air, and our oceans.
By creating ecobricks, we safely trap plastic waste, keeping it out of the environment while giving it a second life in a way that’s practical and meaningful. Each ecobrick can lock away hundreds of plastic packets, wrappers, and soft plastics that would otherwise sit in landfill for centuries.
On our homestead, ecobricks are a small but powerful tool in our zero-waste journey — a reminder that every piece of plastic we save from the bin is a small act of care for the earth. It’s a simple yet powerful way to take responsibility for our consumption and transform everyday waste into something that serves the land, rather than harming it.
We also welcome guests and volunteers to get involved in ecobrick-making during their stay — it’s a great hands-on way to shift your relationship with waste and see what's really hiding in everyday packaging. We turn our waste into something useful.
How to Make an Ecobrick
A simple step with a big impact.
What you’ll need:
A clean, dry plastic bottle (any size, but 5L is ideal, the bigger neck hole means you can pack bigger things into the bottle!)
Non-recyclable, clean & dry plastic waste
A stick or wooden skewer to compact the plastic
Patience and persistence!
Making your own Eco-Brick, a Step-by-step Guide :
1. Clean everything — Make sure your bottle and plastic waste are clean and completely dry to prevent mold.
2. Cut or tear the plastic into small pieces so they pack tightly and evenly.
3. Stuff the bottle little by little, using your stick to push the plastic down firmly. The goal is to make the bottle dense and solid.
4. Keep compacting — Your ecobrick should be hard enough to stand or sit on without squishing.
Once full, your ecobrick becomes a building block — ready to be used anywhere we build with care and creativity.
